Medicare rebates with a referral from your doctor
All Australians are eligible for up to 10 rebated sessions of psychological counselling in any calendar year if they are referred by a doctor. You can ask your GP for a Mental Health Care Plan referral to a psychologist. This first referral will be for 6 sessions, with the opportunity to be referred for another 4 if required. Medicare offers a rebate of $86.15 for registered psychologists. This rebate will be automatically credited to your bank account following your appointment. Click here for more information about Medicare rebates.
Private Health Insurance
Many private health insurance companies offer rebates for psychological counselling. Each one has different rules about what you can claim, depending on your cover. Check with your insurance company to find out what they offer.
